Habitat or Range of LemursTheir are fifty different kinds of lemurs but only ten kind are critically endangered. All lemurs are found only in Madagascar (an island off the coast of Africa), and the neighboring Comores Islands. But on these islands, lemurs live in a variety of habitats. Some live in moist, tropical rainforests, while others live in dry desert areas. In southern Madagascar, ring tailed lemurs inhabit 3 different types of forest. These include the Ankoba forest, which consists of Pithosolobium trees and a few tamarinds, figs, and Melia. Before humans arrived in Madagascar (about 1,500 years ago), there were more than a dozen species of giant lemurs. Since the arrival of humans, 14 species of lemur have disappeared (nearly all of these were larger than the surviving lemurs today).
